about
I know this song is about my childhood and early teenage years... I can't remember the prompt, but it led to some rather resealing lyrics.
lyrics
I was born with a brand new ache, skipping rocks into the lake
I didn't need nobody next to me
I was born with the heart of a child, I never had to search for my smile
And I would give it away for free
I'd ride my bike, through the park,
I'd leave in the morning, be home after dark
I would dream away the day
Sure, I had friends, they would come and go
But nobody knew my heart and my soul
And one day mama... she put me on a plane
New York to Texas, a foreign land
Everything I owned I carried in my hands
I'm in the backseat of a car
Driven by a strange man
He said "call me father, daddy if you wanted"
We're going home, I didn't know the house was haunted
We walked down the hall... he showed me my room
I lived with them, year after year
Between religion & abuse I wanted to disappear
I built a wall of lies around my frame
To protect myself, to avoid the blame
I wanted God and I wanted a girl
I found them both and set out into the world
I heard a melody in my heart so strong
So I bought a guitar and wrote song after song
I never questioned that it was my escape
Music lets the light in, it would lead the way
So I followed it, followed it, followed it, wherever it led
But now I'm looking back and my first love is gone
I remember every detail of how it went wrong
Like every truth, we were both to blame
We were like a bow and arrow without an aim
Maybe it was God shining a light on me
While my heart and my soul were absentee
He sent me a woman like a master key
Unlocked my heart and set me free
Who am I?
How am I?
Why am I?
Who am I?
How am I?
Why am I?
I and I... can't see why...
