The Price of Failure -
----------------------
This was the first of the songs I remember recording at the top of the stairwell at The Waffle House Studio. I recall that we had to go in there afterhours because there were other office tenants that needed the office from 8-5. We were in a common area set up to record while Matt was set up to engineer on the mixing board in the small office that he had rented. I also remember thinking to myself that I wasn't too terribly worried about getting a good take because I don't remember these being songs we expected to release. I remember them being songs that were recorded in an effort to get some pre-production demos that we could use to continue to refine and re-record at a later time. This gave me the confidence to go all out and just go for it. I listen to this now and I can hear how I was attempting to play things that I would not have had the confidence to try and nail on a track that I would have recorded *for real*. As loose as it is, I also remember hearing it back and thinking, "Wow. That's me. I played that!" As a sidenote, I hear some of my best attempts at channeling more Dale Baker on the breakdown where it's just me playing the groove at 2:55 with Taylor singing over it before blasting into the last half of the song.

This song was unique to me in that there was verse after verse after verse and it wasn't a traditional verse / chorus / solo kind of arrangement. I remember thinking how fresh it seemed to me at the time and Taylor's vocal attack was aggressive and gritty and confident and I love listening to this song. For no more than Matt's little studio set up was, we captured some magic upstairs that night. ~ Chris Dodds
